"Ce dictionnaire répond à une triple volonté: il entend d'abord établir le bilan de plusieurs décennies de réflexion théorique, plus de quarante ans après la parution du Pacte autobiographique (1975) de Philippe Lejeune. Il vise ensuite à cartographier un champ de recherches dont l'extension est souvent mal comprise : l'autobiographie au sens strict, mais également, et plus globalement, les écritures de soi. À un moment où la médiatisation de l'autofiction brouille les frontières entre fiction et non-fiction, il semble important de décrire les spécificités du champ non fictionnel et de se demander si l'écriture autobiographique est un modèle d'écriture identifiable à quelques traits précis ou un registre qui transcende les frontières génériques. Enfin, ce dictionnaire souhaite féconder un nouvel élan théorique. Il dépasse une vulgate promue par l'institution scolaire et universitaire, constituée en canon, ne se limite pas aux seuls corpus consacrés mais s'intéresse également à des auteurs méconnus, voire aux écritures ordinaires. Derrière le succès de l'autobiographie se cache une diversité de pratiques et de genres ayant en commun l'écriture à la première personne, qui connaissent des fortunes variables mais ne cessent de se nourrir réciproquement : Mémoires, souvenirs, témoignages, journaux personnels, correspondances intimes, chroniques... Il s'agit de désenclaver l'autobiographie en la réinscrivant dans une large continuité historique et au sein de l'espace francophone ; les écritures de soi, souvent réduites à leur seule prétention à calquer le monde, sont aussi des supports essentiels au renouvellement de la création littéraire."--Back cover
