Nevertheless, or perhaps because of that, the biography of Alexander the Great and the history of his era is surrounded by legend and difficult to reconstruct. This circumstance is primarily due to the extreme complexity of the sources, because the once numerous reports of contemporaries are almost completely lost and accessible only through the works of later authors.
